About

Nattier Ceramics was launched in Naarm Melbourne in 2023 by Natalie Rich. Nattier is Nat's unique interpretation of functional ceramic objects.

Thanks to a design background Nat has a broad range of tools in her kit to convert creative concepts into finished pieces.

Nattier Ceramics take inspiration from the intersection of the natural world and manufactured environment. Working with fine Limoges porcelain fired to 1280°C, the nature of the material means that the collection is always lightweight and though it imposes gentle handling, it is extremely strong and stable.

All Nattier Ceramics are slipcast by Nat in her studio. The range features a carefully curated palette of coloured clays with a clear gloss glaze. In most instances, glaze is used sparingly to highlight texture contrast and also assist in the practicality of keeping the wares cleanable.

Impact

Every effort is made in the Nattier studio to produce ethically and mindfully.

  • Design

Every design is extremely well considered and critically analysed. From hand sketching to CAD modeling, errors in making are substantially reduced due to the preparation taken before using materials and resources to produce prototypes. The permanence of ceramic material is respected, aiming for every piece to be enjoyed for generations.

  • Material and Energy Conservation

Limoges clay carbon miles are carefully considered. Limoges is from France however Nattier only uses it in its pure powdered state i.e. dry. In the studio, water is mixed in saving 45% water weight in international transportation.

  • Reuse and Recycle

Waste materials are recycled and reused. Retired plaster moulds are composted. Unfired clay scraps are dried and reincorporated as much as possible.

  • Power Consumption

Kiln firings are precious and are treated accordingly. Kilns are always densely packed without spare space. Nattier Ceramics are very carefully once fired compared to the customary double firing. This reduces firing time by 50% using substantially less energy.

  • Packaging

All packaging materials are recyclable and compostable (no conventional soft plastic bubblewrap) and shipped carbon neutral.

  • Continual Learning

The field of design and environmental ‘best practice’ is constantly evolving and Nattier Ceramics pledges to continually develop as new practices and techniques are uncovered.

Product Information

Due to the handmade nature, all pieces have a unique 'sway' and minor discrepancies and irregularities will occur in size, shape, texture and colour. This is natural for any handmade ceramic product and any slight differences should be embraced as a unique characteristic.

Product Care

Nattier Ceramic pieces are safe to use in the oven, dishwasher and microwave, and are designed to last. However, please be sure to still always handle your pieces with
care. Sudden, extreme change in temperature (eg. from freezer to hot oven) can damage the porcelain. To prevent scratching the glazed surface, ideally you
should avoid using very sharp knives and store your pieces with cloth/paper/felt
between layers. With proper care, your Nattier Ceramics pieces will last a lifetime.
