The making
From first idea to finished piece
Every piece is made one by one, by hand, in our studio in Naarm Melbourne. All production is in house, from design through to fulfilment.
Every piece is an original design. Ideas become sketches, then paper models, clay models and CAD versions, refined until the form is just so.
The model is made, then plaster moulds are taken from it, ready for casting. The clay is prepared by mixing dry to wet, then stained and balanced. The glaze is prepared the same way.
Liquid porcelain slip is poured into the plaster mould, which draws out the water to form a fine skin of porcelain. Once it reaches the right thickness, the excess slip is drained and the cast released. It is trimmed and smoothed, stamped with the maker’s mark when leather hard, then dried, glazed and fired once to 1280°C.
Unloaded from the kiln, each piece is checked and its unglazed surfaces sanded smooth, then wrapped and packed into its gift box, ready to send.

Made to be used every day
Material
Porcelain is made mostly from kaolin, a very fine white clay, with feldspar and quartz. Fired to 1280°C, these fuse into a dense, glassy body, strong enough to be made thin and light. In Natural White it is softly translucent, a defining quality of porcelain that stoneware doesn't share. We work in Limoges porcelain for its natural cream colour when unstained, and for the way it handles in the studio and meets the demands of our forms.
Colour and finish
Colour is stained directly into the porcelain, not painted onto the surface, so it runs right through each piece. Natural White is the porcelain uncoloured. All colours are developed in house. Tableware has a high gloss clear glaze on the top or interior, with a soft matte unglazed base or exterior. Lighting is matte and unglazed throughout.
Most pieces are available in all five colours.
Maker’s mark
Tableware and vessels carry a hand-stamped maker’s mark: Nattier Ceramics, Handmade, Naarm Melbourne, Porcelain.
Made for every day
Oven, dishwasher and microwave safe, and made to be used every day. As every piece is handmade, size and weight vary slightly. Lighting can be wiped clean with a soft dry cloth.
